Founder, Sonata Rapalyte
How/Where did it all Begin?
Born In Lithuania, Sonata Rapalyte started her love affair with beautiful fabrics when she was just a small child, dancing around her mother’s bedroom - whilst dressing up in lavish dresses - "It made me feel pretty and... happy..."
Sonata first picked up a needle and thread at the tender age of seven. She always knew where her passion lay, but really came into her own when she moved to London and worked for a string of lingerie designers including Damaris with whom Sonata launched the first ever Damaris collection. Living and working in London for a number of years Sonata realised there was a market for beautiful, luxurious lingerie. With ambition, she decided to create her own lingerie line.
With a love for travel as well as her passion for lingerie, Sonata moved to the Sardinian coast, it was there that Sonata designed her entire first collection, she says of her inspiration - "I was surrounded by unmistakable and breathtaking beauty on the Island..... It was so inspirational. I used to take a boat and sail out to the middle of the ocean, sit in the sun with the breeze, waves - and just design"
What Fabrics do you like to use and why?
I use only the best! Silk chiffon and silk satin, incorporating solstiss lace and swarovski crystals in almost all of my designs. The reason being, that I believe my designs are truly unique and you cannot experience that if you do not use the best materials around. Apart from that, all my products are made by hand, so they are very delicate - making each item carefully crafted with a lot of love and care.
Have you had a chance to Travel?
I have travelled quite a bit of Europe, but there are so many places to see, that I cannot pin point a specific place I REALLY want to go. I guess from my top 3, it would have to include America (as vast as this sounds, I believe it's completely different to England and I would like to experience their cultures and lifestyles), Thailand...who does not want to go there!? and probably South Africa - I've heard so many good things about it and the wildlife is supposed to be amazing out there! I can only imagine (for now!) to be in touch with nature like that.
Where do you draw your Inspiration from?
Believe it or not, but I get most of my design inspiration from shoes! There are so many great shoe designs out there, that I simply cannot resist working some of that creativity into my own designs. I guess I just have a really good eye for detail! For daily inspiration - when I feel a bit overwhelmed and nothing seems to be going my way, I just remind myself to be grateful for what I have, as there are so many people much worse off than me. (I know this sounds a bit vain...but it gets me through the day!)
Where is your Home Town and do you still live there?
I was born in Lithuania in a town called Gargzdai.
What is the best piece of Advice you’ve ever been given?
Do unto others as you want done to yourself. I live by this advice day by day.
What is your Quirkiest Habit?
I am disturbingly obsessed with cleanliness and tidiness. I will not sit still until all my home chores are done!...I guess this is a good thing really!? I've had this habit ever since I can remember and I'm sure my family will tell you the same thing!
What is your Happiest Memory?
I guess my happiest moment was not too long ago really! My partner and I moved to Sardinia for a few years. Living on an island as beautiful as that, eating only the best local produce and of course the beach and sun right by your fingertips...who wouldn't be happy!
