Founder, Alexandra Popa

How /Where did it all begin?

Arriving at fashion lingerie through a desire for personal change, I founded Bordelle – a provocative play on words and an ironic wink between sex and fashion in the lingerie industry – in the autumn of 2007. Having studied for a career in the City, but with a genuine interest and admiration for the fashion industry, the lucrative world of finance was early on abandoned in pursuit of a more creative role.

The idea of Bordelle was fuelled while working on the business side of a small fashion house in London. This experience brought to light the stark difference in innovation between the RTW collections where designers were consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity, and a somewhat more static and overtly frou frou intimate apparel industry.

Bordelle was born from the strong belief that the creative gap between the two could be filled. Drawing on inspirational cult movies (Luc Besson’s Angela, The Night Porter,  Gia, The Story of O) and their heroines (Rie Rasmussen as Angela, Charlotte Rampling as Lucia, Angelina Jolie as Gia and O) to define a fearless and liberating attitude, with a nod to les enfants terribles of the 80s (Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Herve Leger) and Helmut Newton’s imagery, a striking look emerged. Never compromising on quality and with an emphasis on originality achieved through a balance of unconventional design, customised materials and a closely guarded and proprietary construction  technique, Bordelle collections offer a perfect  blend of lingerie and outerwear featuring a luxury S&M sensuality.

Today the concept is  led by a visionary and passionate creative team from Bordelle’s West London Atelier.  Signature collections are all hand-made in-house, and the activities of the atelier continue to grow with our discerning clients’ increasing requests for Bespoke, Speciality products and Made to Measure services.

How would you describe your style?

The Bordelle style exudes confidence and originality.

What Fabrics do you use and why?

Bordelle’s signature bandage pieces are made from customised lustrous elastic bands to achieve hour-glass silhouettes. The effect achieved could be compared to that of a modern day, comfortable corset – we do not use boning to shape or restrict.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Past experiences have taught me to always follow my gut instinct. When faced with doubt or uncertainty listen to your inner-self.
